Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), the largest commercial bank in the country, was restructured in 1980 through the merger of Addis Bank into CBE. Addis Bank itself was formed from the merger of the nationalized Addis Ababa Bank and the Ethiopian branches of Banco di Roma and Banco di Napoli. Today, CBE plays a pivotal role in the economic development of Ethiopia.
