The Legal Team within the Ethiopia Delegation plays a vital role in promoting and implementing International Humanitarian Law (IHL) through technical support, legal advice, and collaborations with government bodies, academic institutions, and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS).

Purpose of the Position
The Legal Intern will assist the Legal Team in strengthening humanitarian law, organizing thematic programs, conducting legal research, and supporting legal-operational activities. This role requires a responsible, analytical, and highly organized individual capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Research & Documentation
- Conduct legal research on IHL and related thematic issues.
- Draft legal notes, memos, briefing documents, and compatibility studies.
- Support the preparation of position papers and legal recommendations.
2. Training, Dissemination & Public Engagement
- Assist in planning and delivering workshops, seminars, roundtables, and external outreach programs.
- Deliver presentations on IHL topics when required.
- Help develop monitoring and evaluation tools for IHL-related activities.
3. Academic & Institutional Collaboration
- Maintain relationships with academic institutions, researchers, and IHL alumni.
- Support the coordination of national, regional, and global IHL competitions.
- Contribute to strengthening networks within the academic community.
4. Translation & Interpretation
- Translate documents from English to local languages and vice versa.
- Provide interpretation during workshops, meetings, and events when needed.
5. Administrative & Operational Support
- Organize and maintain IHL documentation files.
- Update IHL databases and monitoring tools regularly.
- Attend internal meetings on behalf of the Legal Team.
- Support other departments with legal-operational advice under supervision.
6. Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and submit activity reports, meeting minutes, and workshop summaries.
- Ensure strict confidentiality in handling information.
- Follow ICRC’s administrative and financial procedures.
Job Requirements
To qualify for this position, candidates should meet the following requirements:
Educational Background
- LL.B. required, with demonstrated interest in IHL and Human Rights Law.
- LL.M. (completed or in progress) in related fields is a strong asset.
Skills & Experience
- Strong legal research, analysis, writing, and communication skills.
- Participation in national or international IHL competitions or moot courts is a major plus.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in English and Amharic (knowledge of other languages is an advantage).
